Principal's Message.....

By Debbie Halkett | Posted: Friday June 2, 2023

Our Purpose: To prepare students to be active participants who will contribute to their community.

Thanks for the support at short notice on Wednesday afternoon for the stop-work meeting for teachers.

Teachers and students have been working hard to ensure our Student Led Conferences are successful, and thank you to those parents who have made booking an interview priority. If you have yet to do so, please contact your child's teachers via email, it is not too late. Thank you for your support in keeping your child home to ensure our teachers are able to focus on these important conferences. If you do require your child to be supervised please ensure you have emailed office@oamaruint.school.nz

Choir Festival

This week I got to hear the Music Festival Choir practicing at school. They're sounding beautiful and it is sure to be an entertaining night. Our choir is coached by Anneke Catto and I am certainly looking forward to hearing them perform on Wednesday 14 June.

Music Festival tickets are available to purchase from our school office. Please do not ring the office and ask us to put tickets aside for you. They are non-transferable between the two nights, and OIS is performing on the evening of Wednesday14 June.

  • They are $10 each and are for unallocated seating (first in, first serve). CASH ONLY PLEASE - DO NOT PAY ONLINE!
  • Unfortunately, tickets are limited to two (2) per family, however, if you need more, you are welcome to put your name on the waiting list at our office, and any unallocated tickets will be handed out after initial sales are closed. Money for these tickets can be paid for when, and if, additional tickets are allocated. Please do not pay for any more than 2 tickets per family.
  • Ticket sales will close on Friday 9 June for Oamaru Intermediate School.
  • There will be no door sales available on the night.

Attendance

Regular school attendance is pivotal for academic success and overall development. We know that consistency of attendance ensures an uninterrupted flow of learning, offering new opportunities to expand knowledge, engage with peers, and interact with teachers. In addition, by being present consistently, students establish strong foundations, build habits, and set themselves up for success in high school.

Children who are at school:

  • have no learning gaps
  • know what is happening
  • enjoy school more
  • can achieve potential
  • have increased self-esteem
  • establish good relationships

As a parent, the biggest way we can support our student's education is by ensuring that they are attending school every day so please make school a priority for your child.

If you require any support with getting your child to school please make contact with your child’s teacher. The Public Health Nurse, Youthline Counsellor, Attendance Officer, and Learning Support coordinators are only too happy to support our tamariki regularly attending school.

If your child is sick, it is important that you contact the school office. If your child is going to be late for any reason they must sign in when they get to school. A reminder school starts at 8.45 am each morning.

Winter sport

Seeing so many families at basketball, netball, and hockey over the last few weeks has been wonderful. Again, thank you to the parents who have helped manage and support our teams. Today in assembly I spoke to the students about Fairplay, whether this be at the weekend or after school sports, or during class time. It is important that our students hold the IDEAL values at all times, however, we know at times that there can be misunderstandings and if, and when it happens, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with the teacher in charge of that sporting code.

Before and after school

We have a number of students who are going to New World before and after school. Please can you go with your child if they are going to New World. We also ask that students don’t arrive at the school gate before 8.20 am. It's important that students come and wait by the gate and not on the corner.

Have a great long weekend!
