Congratulations to two of our Student leaders Austen Fitita and Jasmine Hansen who spoke at our Open Evening on Monday night. Well done to you both!

Hello, My name is Austen Fifita.

My time at OIS has been the best school years of my life. There are endless opportunities to get involved in so many different activities. There is really something for everyone.

I live for sport and at OIS I have been able to play every imaginable sport. Whether you're at the top of your game and super competitive or you want to try a new sport, there is something for you. My highlight in sport here would be participating in the James Hargest interschool. We either go to Invercargill or they come to us and we battle it out in heaps of different sports. It is a great experience and everyone who goes enjoys it. If sports are not your thing, there are heaps of other activities to try including chess, kapa haka, after-school music lessons, pasifika and so many more.

Other highlights include Technology classes and house competitions. Go kowhai!

Here at OIS, we have a unique reward system called IDEAL. Ideal represents our four values, dare to succeed, engage with mana, act with respect, and learn with purpose. Every time a teacher notices you showing one of these values they will give you a card for the value you were showing. After collecting ten of one value you get given a badge. When you have all of the badges you are officially an IDEAL student. If you happen to get 20 cards of value, you will get a gold badge.

The teachers at OIS are absolutely incredible and you are guaranteed to have 2 great years. Both years that I have been here I have been lucky enough to be in extension maths. As well as challenging me to be the best that I can be, we also have a load of fun.

Like primary school, you stay in a homeroom for all of the core subjects, like reading, writing, and maths. I found this comforting as it wasn’t a huge step up from primary. You stay with the same classmates for a year, giving you time to make new connections with people from other schools. When you get a new classroom in year 8, you usually have 3 or 4 people from year 7 too, which I find is nice when you’re in a class full of new faces.

Thank you, and I am sure you will enjoy your new school years at OIS!

Hello, my name is Jasmine Hansen I am a house captain of Ngaio house.

As I reflect on my time at Oamaru Intermediate School, I'm overwhelmed by the incredible experiences that have shaped me. OIS has been a haven of creativity and inclusivity, where every student finds their place.

OIS also has opportunities you cannot get at other schools. One of these opportunities is the chance to compete in the James Hargest exchange. The James Hargest exchange is one of my favorite events in the school. You get to compete in sports if you are good enough, travel down to Invercargill every second year, and get billeted to stay with a student from that school. We also have House competitions throughout the year. The events we compete in to accumulate house points are house choirs, duathlon, cross-country and swimming sports. You can also be a part of many clubs such as chess, music, and dungeons and dragons. And those that make the most of these opportunities get great new experiences and memories.

One of the unique things about OIS is the Technology department which includes Hard materials, Art, Food and Digital. In the realm of digital technology, I've discovered the magic of coding and design, turning abstract ideas into interactive realities. Through hard materials, I've honed my skills in craftsmanship, transforming raw materials into practical and beautiful objects. Food technology has tantalized my taste buds and taught me the art of culinary creation, allowing me to explore flavors from around the world. But it's in art technology that my imagination truly soared. I've painted sculpted stories, and captured fleeting moments through a lens. Each canvas, clay, and click of the camera became a gateway to express myself in ways words often can't.

And speaking of expression, our upcoming musical is a testament to OIS's commitment to nurturing every student's talents. The stage has become a canvas for our voices, dance moves, and acting prowess to merge into a harmonious masterpiece. This musical journey is a testament to OIS's dedication to showcasing our diverse talents and fostering unity.

As you prepare to move forward, remember to carry the friendships, skills, and memories that you have created. But don’t forget to make new friends, skills and more memories. Oamaru Intermediate School is not just an institution—it's a home where everyone finds their place in the spotlight.

Thank you and enjoy the rest of your evening touring the school.
