Principal's Message...

Our Purpose: To prepare students to be active participants who will contribute to their community.

Tēnā koutou katoa, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Bula vinaka

It has been a busy two weeks for a number of students and staff who have been involved in a variety of different opportunities. While we didn’t come back from James Hargest with the overall trophy, I am certainly proud of our students. They were excellent ambassadors both on and off the field.

This week we had a group of writers out learning about the Quarry, budding netballers at the Netty festival, and have started the second rotation of our options programmes. I love moving around the rooms and exploring what students are learning and creating. Being the Tumuaki of Oamaru Intermediate is a privilege and get to work with an incredible group of students, passionate staff and a super supportive community. For this, I am always grateful.

Our winter sports programme is coming to an end. We have had high levels of participation across a variety of sports which has been great to see. I wish to acknowledge the work of our sports coordinator, Sharon Wilson for the excellent work she has done in this area, and our teachers India, Hannah and Paul who have ensured the weekly competitions are a success. I also thank all coaches and managers for their contribution to our sports programme. It's much appreciated!

Please remind your child about taking care when travelling to and from school. Take the opportunity to discuss with your child about being particularly careful when crossing roads. As we know, the roads around Intermediate are particularly busy so if your child scooters, walks or bikes, please encourage them to use a pedestrian crossing when available. Heading straight home after school is preferred and where possible walking, biking or riding scooters with friends always help to keep students safe. We encourage children to do the right thing for their safety, please reinforce this message at home.

Being on time for school

O.I.S starts at 8.45 am so it is important that students are on time for school. The information that students find out during the first 10 minutes of the day will set your child up for a positive day.

  • get important notices
  • set up the plan for the day
  • review what has been learnt
  • set the tasks for a lesson

Uniforms

Our school uniform fosters a sense of identity, belonging, and pride in our students. It ensures a consistently high standard of dress is worn throughout the day and provides a cost-effective and practical dress code. Please check your child’s uniform and ensure that it is clean, tidy and named. Also, take this opportunity to check your child's shoes as we have noticed that students’ shoes are not looking their best. Remember no canvas shoes! We have also noticed that non-regulation uniform items have started to appear. At O.I.S our rules regarding jewellery are

  • a watch

  • and a small plain stud in each ear.

  • nail polish, makeup and dyed hair are not permitted

Students are expected to have their PE gear each day at school, they must come to school in correct school uniform. With the weather warming up, girls can start wearing white ankle socks rather than blue tights. We really appreciate your support in ensuring that our students are in their correct uniform.

Have a great weekend!
