Just 25 more surveys to go! “Safe in your space” Fire Safety programme at OIS

Your child has completed the FireWise programme at school, the first Intermediate School in New Zealand for this programme. We have set your child some homework to go home and see where their closest smoke alarm is located. If they don’t have one in their bedroom we are offering a free Home Fire Safety Visit and will install a smoke alarm within their room for free. See the link at the end of the article to complete it.

Hopefully, they learned a lot about fire safety and what to do if they ever find themselves in a house fire situation.

During the programme, we cover things like the speed of fire, escape plans and the importance of smoke alarms. “Safe in your space” focus on how your child can be safe in their bedrooms with their electrical devices.

As your child gets older they spend more time in their bedroom, most likely with the door closed. A solid door can hold back a fire within a room for up to 30-minutes, which is why we often advise shutting the door on a fire where at all possible. But the same 30-minute period can also work against us. If a fire starts inside a bedroom with no smoke alarms and a closed door, there will be no early detection.

Your child may not wake up in the event of a fire.

We have set your child some homework to go home and see where their closest smoke alarm is located. If they don’t have one in their bedroom we are offering a free Home Fire Safety Visit and will install a smoke alarm within their room for free.

So, that’s where you come in! You can help by filling in the online form and working with your child to fill out all the sections of the form, starting with your own home. Even if you don’t need smoke alarms these answers will help us to gain valuable information about your community and point us in the right direction regarding who needs fire-safety education most (of course all information is treated confidentially, and all data held securely). The form can also be used multiple times so if there are friends or family who might need smoke alarms – feel free to fill it out with them too!

In return for all their hard work, our team will then come back to the school with a fire truck and a range of fire-safety-related games and activities.

We appreciate your help with this!
