Waka Ama experience - Karitane

For the last four Thursdays, a group of up to ten students have visited Karitane.

Some of the skills these students have developed are knot tying, becoming more fluent with their Mihi, and delving deeper into understanding the voyage of their ancestral waka.

Each session, they also got out on the water. There were paddleboards, a six-seater and a four-seater waka with ama, and a four-seater double-hull waka (just like the one in the Moana movie)! We learnt that communication and teamwork are vital in order to move where you want to go.

Thank you, must go to Tumai Ora for allowing us this amazing opportunity.
