“Christmas and that breakaway is just around the corner. I’m asking everyone who is going away to make the journey part of the holiday, as tiredness (often called fatigue) and driving is a big problem in New Zealand.

So as you plan your journey to your holiday destination, please make sure you build in a stop every two hours or so. People often think driving for 4 or 5 hours is fine, however as you get tired and continue driving you are putting your family and other road users at risk. A short 15 or 20 minute stop, could refresh you to carry on your journey (it might also stop you having a crash). Attached is some examples of travel times and suggested stopping towns.

So before you leave, check this great website https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/. Not only will it show you the time and distance of your journey, but it will also have any roadworks or delays along the way. It will also allow you to think about your stopping places, maybe get the children to find a café or park and include them in the journey planning?

Have a wonderful Christmas and make some wonderful memories.”
