Principal's Message...

As we reach the halfway point, it is very timely that next week we will be holding our Learning Conferences. This is a perfect opportunity to pause and reflect on how well your child is tracking towards achieving their goals and what needs to be done to make further progress. We aim for 100% attendance at our mid year conferences, so it is important that your child comes along to their conference with you.
To enable us to offer all students Learning Conferences we will be finishing school at 2pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. Buses will run at the normal times, so if your child needs supervision until 3pm please contact the school office or email your teacher.
Often when we finish school early our students head to public places to congregate in town. Unfortunately this hasn’t always resulted in our Oamaru Intermediate IDEAL values being upheld. I strongly encourage you to know where your child is and who is going to be supervising them. The safety of your child is paramount.
EPRO8
This week we had two teams of students head to Dunedin to participate in the EPRO8 tournament. We had a very successful night with our girls team taking out first place and the boys team coming 8th overall.This was an excellent opportunity for our students to participate in a competition that promotes science and engineering. Our students have worked super hard in preparation for this event. A huge thank you to Monica Genet for her organisation and ensuring that the children were ready to participate.
Road Safety
You would have read a lot of messages since the start of the term regarding road safety for our students who bike or scooter to school. This time I need your support! If you pick your child up from school I would ask that you do not park on Pembroke Street close to the school entrance or drive into the school from 2.50pm-3.05pm. Please arrange with your child to meet you down the road or use the Dacre Street Entrance.
Yellow Lines: You will have noticed we have a number of yellow lines around the school entrance. Please do not stop on these, under any circumstances.
Teacher Meetings
There is a PUM (Union Meeting) for teachers on the Tuesday 22nd June. We are asking your support so teachers can attend this meeting. If possible please collect your children from school at 1.05 pm on this day. There will be limited supervision available for those who can’t collect their children.
Sports
I have heard some great things about the behaviour of our children while they represent the school in sports teams. Well done to them! Also thank you to all parents/teachers who support through team management and coaching.
Kia Kaha Programme
Our Year 7 students are going to participate in the Kia Kaha programme in consultation with the police. The Kia Kaha programme develops strategies for respectful relationships where bullying behaviours are not tolerated. You can find more information about this programme from the New Zealand Police Website - Kia Kaha Year 7/8 programme. Constable Carrie Hamilton and Ross Lory will be joining the classes for part of these lessons.
An amazing opportunity has come up for 4 Year 7 boys and 4 Year 7 girls to attend a camp in Queenstown. Year 7 students have already received information about this.
This camp is run by the Blue Light Charity Trust in conjunction with the NZ Police. As part of this programme our students have been offered an opportunity to travel to Queenstown and participate in an Activity Camp. The idea behind it is to provide an opportunity for young people that may never have experienced, or for those young people who had had a rough time and could do with three days of exciting adventures. Year 7 students who want to have the opportunity to be selected must bring the permission slip back before 9am Tuesday morning. We will be announcing the 8 students on Thursday afternoon.
