Week 2 Term 2

We are in full swing with term two. This week we have had a visit from Youthtown and Year 7 students have had their second week of technology. Year 8 students will start technology next week.

Winter sports training and games have started. Thank you for your support in organising your child with the correct gear and getting them to games/training on time.

We started our after school guitar lessons this week and we still have spaces for two beginning guitar students. If you are interested please contact the school office or email me at prinicipal@oamaruint.school.nz. The lesson is at 4.00 pm - 4.30 pm on a Monday.

At Oamaru Intermediate one of our values is Acting with Respect, this means respecting self, others, and our environment. This year I have talked in Assembly and in the newsletter about students doing the right thing even when others are choosing not to, speaking up when something isn’t right and seeking help when a situation is unsafe. Next Friday, we will be encouraging students to ‘Wear Something Pink’. This is in support of students to Speak up, Stand up and Stop bullying. Below is a link that has some very useful resources for parents and whanau. At Oamaru Intermediate we have a zero tolerance for bullying, if you are worried or have concerns about your child then please contact your child’s classroom teacher to make time to discuss your concerns.

Parents and whānau

At O.I.S we are very proud of our school environment and take a lot of pride in how it looks. Bill McKay, our Property Manager, spends a great deal of time ensuring that our school environment is safe, tidy and well cared for. Unfortunately, not everyone takes as much pride in the school as we do, and from time to time we can be the target for vandals. Over the holidays our B.O.T had a new security system put in around the school. These cameras will discourage vandals and keep our staff and students safe.

With the weather cooling down, especially in the morning, it is important that students do not arrive at school before 8.30am. Thank you for your support with ensuring your child is wearing the correct school uniform. Your child is allowed to wear a jacket outside at break times as long as they have an OIS blue jersey or polar fleece underneath. We have optional school jackets available at the school office.

Our Health and Safety Policy is up for review and a copy of this is at the school office if you would like to read and comment on it.

At the end of term two, Karen McNabb will be leaving Oamaru Intermediate School. After a number of years in the Food and Textiles Technology rooms.  Karen has been a very valued team member and a key person in developing our gardens, environment group and caring for the chickens. We wish her the very best.

Since the year has started we have taken a number of phone calls and emails in the morning voicing the concerns you have as parents about the speed of traffic going past our school at 8.30am and 3.00pm. It is time to have your say.

Information from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is consulting on a proposed new Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2021.

The proposed new rule will introduce:

  • A new speed management planning framework that decides speed limits on roads within a region, that is coordinated and consulted at a regional level once every three years.

  • A new process for developing and consulting on speed management plans, and subsequent certification. This means road controlling authorities will no longer be required to make a bylaw or gazette to set a speed.

  • The roles and responsibilities of Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency as a regulator and a road controlling authority.

  • The roles and responsibilities of territorial authority road controlling authorities, regional transport committees and an independent speed management committee in relation to the new speed management planning process.

  • The requirements for lower speed limits outside all schools, including targets:

    • urban schools to 30 km/h, with the option of 40 km/h speed limits if appropriate

    • rural schools to a maximum of 60 km/h (variable or permanent speed limits).

  • More flexibility for road controlling authorities in setting speed limits and greater local community input into this process through consultation

Feedback for speed limits around schools, can be given by completing a survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WSR5SV5

Have a wonderful safe weekend
