Into the Classroom

At Oamaru Intermediate School we place a strong emphasis on raising achievement, particularly in reading, writing and mathematics. Students are grouped into class settings with children to maximise learning experiences. This enables targeted teaching to take place. For some high achieving students this may involve joining a cross-class group for extension work, for other students, this may mean additional learning support.

The Board of Trustees generously funds teacher aide support in classrooms during literacy and mathematics providing extra help for groups of students.

Oamaru Intermediate School promotes learning through an inquiry approach. Several programmes of work particularly in science and social sciences provide choices for students to inquire into areas of personal interest. This flexibility encourages students to take ownership of their learning, be self-managing, and become critical and creative thinkers.

The health and well-being of our students is important. We offer a broad range of physical education opportunities aimed at developing the physical, social and emotional aspects of the individual. Health education deals with topics of particular importance to emerging adolescents.

The arts are taught as part of the technology and modules programmes by teachers with specialised skills in these areas

Across each of the technology areas, students are taught the process of technological practice. They are given the opportunity to explore, design and create their own outcome/product in each area while being exposed to specialist equipment and teaching within modern and well-equipped rooms. For safety reasons all students must enter the technology rooms with covered shoes and long hair must be tied back. All students spend a three-week block in each of the areas – Hard Materials, Art, Digital Technologies, Food and Textiles.
